Volker Matthias is physicist and chemistry transport modeller. He is Head of the Department "Chemistry Transport Modelling" at the Institute of Coastal Environmental Chemistry, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, Germany. His main research interest is the combination of atmospheric observations with complex three-dimensional models to get a comprehensive picture of the state of the atmosphere and its constituents.

His research focus is on the formation and transport of aerosol particles in the atmosphere, particularly in the planetary boundary layer. This includes the vertical distribution of aerosols and other pollutants in the troposphere and the long-term effects of persistent organic pollutants, polyaromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals.
