Personal Data & Research Career
Marcus Lange is a scientist and research coordinator with the Hereon Institute of Coastal Environmental Chemistry in Germany. He is assistant to the Director Prof. Ralf Ebinghaus. He has 16 years of experience in coastal research and topics related to ocean and coastal governance. In 2018, he completed his PhD in Geography as part of a scholarship awarded by the Science Foundation Ireland. He is member of the Scientific Steering Commitee of "CoastPredict - Observing and Predicting the Global Coastal Ocean" endorsed program of the UN Ocean Decade of Science for Sustainable development and Research Fellow of the Earth System Governance project and holds an advanced university degree (German Diplom) in Geography. He is the Anchor Person at Hereon for SynCom, the Synthesis and Communication Platform of the Helmholtz Research Area Earth and Environment. He is coordinating the Coastal Pollution Toolbox project, an endorsed project under the UN Ocean Decade.
Pior to joining Hereon, his research was in the field of transformative coastal and ocean governance. As part of his PhD work he engaged with over 110 scientists and stakeholders within interviews, focus group discussions and workshops to better understand the enabling conditions for managing coastal and ocean environments. The special emphasis was on exploring governance dynamics in the exploration process for marine energy, generated from both marine renewables and offshore hydrocarbons. The aim of his studies was to provide decision makers with an understanding of how to improve decisions based on deliberate principles, to find new models of engagement and to incorporate case study learning from best and worse practices examples into decision-making.
Prior to commencing his PhD, Marcus worked as scientist and project manager at the then Institute of Coastal Research (Hereon) (2007-2013). He collaborated in national and international projects and initiatives within interdisciplinary research contexts. In 2010, he joined the Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) project, now Future Earth Coasts, and its International Project Office (IPO) (hosted at Hereon) and coordinated the worldwide network of LOICZ affiliated projects. Together with the LOICZ IPO, he worked on coordinating the 2010 Storm Surges Congress (Hamburg) and the 2011 LOICZ Open Science Conference in Yantai (China). In 2011, he became external consultant with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and lead coordinator of the 2012 GEF International Waters Science Conference in Bangkok (Thailand). In 2014, he changed to Ireland to work with the Coastal and Marine Research Center (CMRC) on transitioning the LOICZ IPO from Hereon to University College Cork.
