Model set-up
In this model study the Chemistry Transport Model CMAQ was used to calculate the atmospheric chemistry and the transport of pollutants in the domain of the North Sea. To achieve the results presented, the Chemistry Transport model is in need of two input data sets: meteorological- and emission data.
The meteorological data (wind speed; temperature, precipitation) were simulated from the COSMO-CLM, while the emissions were derived from the SMOKE-EU emission model.
The land based emissions are based on officially reported EMEP results, as well as point sources from the European point source register. The sea based emissions were developed from the ship emission inventory of 2011 which is based on AIS data (Automatic identification system).
For the 2030 scenarios fleet development was applied and the emission factor was reduced depending on the scenarios and the age of the ships.
