Jana Friedrich is senior scientist and Deputy Head of the Department "Aquatic Nutrient Cycles" at the Institute of Coastal Environmental Chemistry, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. Her expertise is on River-Sea-Systems under climate and human pressures (Elbe - North Sea, Danube Delta - Black Sea, and Aral Sea, Southern Polar Ocean). She coordinates the Elbe-North Sea Supersite of ESFRI DANUBIUS-RI. She is member of the Science Committee of the European Environment Agency (EEA).
Her current research foci:
- River-Sea Systems under climate and human pressures
- Biogeochemical processes at the sediment-water interface and habitats on the seafloor
- Pelagic-benthic coupling
- Sediments as environmental archives
- Natural radionuclides as tracers for environmental processes
