Lecture during the nationwide Week of Climate Adaptation

As part of the German Week of Climate Adaptation, the CoCareSociety project took part in an information event on the EU Mission ‘Adaptation to Climate Change’, which celebrates its 3rd birthday in September 2024. The online event on 17 September 2024 was entitled ‘On a common mission: from national to European - because climate change knows no borders!’ and was intended to show regions, cities and municipalities as well as researchers how they can benefit from the measures of the EU Climate Mission. Special attention was paid to the transfer of national activities to the European level.
Around 70 interested parties learnt about the content and objectives of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, national activities in the field of climate adaptation in Germany, research funding opportunities and advisory and support services. In her presentation ‘From national to European - links between national and EU activities on climate adaptation’, Dr. Jo-Ting Huang-Lachmann introduced the CoCareSociety project. The junior research group leader of the BMBF-funded research project also pointed out links to the European climate mission. Interfaces exist, for example, in the areas of energy infrastructure, buildings and sustainable construction, human health and care as well as in the area of natural climate protection. There are also opportunities to tie in with the implementation plan of the EU mission: the engagement of interest groups, the participation of demonstrating regions and communities, the reference to systemic risks, the development of forward-looking climate services and the interdisciplinary approach of the CoCareSociety project can all be found here. This means that the results and experiences of the CoCareSociety project can also be utilised for EU projects, regions and municipalities in the future and offer new perspectives.

The kick-off event of the junior research group CoCareSociety was held on May, 25th, 26th and 30th, 2023 at the GERICS (Climate Service Center Germany) in Hamburg. On the first day of the event, team members, international partners and practioners gathered in the GERICS conference room. The central focus was to present the project intend of the CoCareSociety junior research group and to encourage discussions by presentations of the international partners.

After a detailed presentation of the project by Dr. Jo-Ting Huang-Lachmann as head of the research group, the director of GERICS and the mentor of the research project, Prof. Dr. Daniela Jacob, welcomed all participants. Moreover, there were interdisciplinary keynote speeches that bring further input to the research of the health-climate-energy nexus:

Dr. Shih-Chun Candice Lung on “Transdisciplinary collaboration on establishing a heat-health warning system”
Dr. Laurens Bouwer on “ Machine learning applications in climate change and health research”
Prof. Dr. Kristie Ebi on “Challenges and opportunities of climate change and health for future societies”
Prof. Dr. Virginia Murray on “Reflections to support Co-Creating Climate Services for Caring Economy and Caring-Society”
Dr. Sokhna Thiam on “Cross-continental challenges : How Africa is taking up health and energy challenges”
Dr. Buyana Kareem on “Climate change – Energy poverty -Nexus really visible in Africa”

On the following day, the relations between health, climate change and energy security were elaborated and presented from different perspectives using a mental model approach. The international background of every participants opened up new perspectives.

The last day of the kick-off event, the so-called "Heatwave Day", focusing on measurements to face the increasing heatwaves. The following experts gave presentations:
