Technical meeting T1: Active environmentally friendly coatings for light metals based on combination of nano-microcontainers

Date: 22.05.2019
University of Tartu / Institute of Chemistry, Ravila 14a, 50409 Tartu, Estonia

Presentations and discussion:
9h30 Tour of the table- Introductions - All partners / All members.

9h40-10h Theme : “Presentation of Tartu University” - Welcome presentation by host
(Enn Lust).

10h-10h50 Theme : “Active corrosion protection of AA2024 using LDH” -
Presentations of HZG group: Dr. Maria Serdechnova.

- Q1 (SK): Affinity of BTA to Zn is almost twice lower than MBT to Zn. Why BTA can not be intercalated in ZnAl LDH in comparison with MBT ?
- A1 (MS): This data is known experimentally now. We should find the mechanistic explanation during the project implementation.
- Q2 (SK): Why LDH-NO3 is helpful for corrosion protection ?
- A2 (MS): It entrap chlorides.
- Q3 (AG): Does any amorphous PEO suitable for LDH formation ?
- A3 (MS): No, only boehmite containing.

11h50 Theme : “Active environmentally friendly coatings for light metals based on combination of nano- and micro-containers” - Presentations of TU group :
Dr. Silvar Kallip.

14h00 Theme : “Plasma electrolytic oxidation” - Joint presentation of MISIS and IPCE teams: Dr. Aleksandra Gladkova & Dr. Aleksander Chirkunov.

- Q4 (MZ): Do you use V2O5 as collorative additive ?
- A4 (AG): Yes, in order to understand mechanism of PEO formation.

Theme : “Corrosion inhibitors for aluminum and magnesium alloys”

- Q5 (LS): Why the mixture of fatty acids works better ?
- A5 (AC): They can pack more dense.
- Q6 (LS): Do you use surface blocking effect ?
- A6 (AC): Yes.
- Q7 (MZ): Do you work mostly with Al or with Mg ?
- A7 (AC): Both. Including technical Mg.
- Q8 (MZ): In which concentration range of inhibitors are you working ?
- A8 (AC): 10-3 – 10 mMol.
- Q9 (AG): Should MISIS prepare and send samples to TU ? Which PEO conditions would be preferential?
- A9 (SK): Yes. The same as for HZG was prepared. 2-3 cm samples would be preferential (1 sample type (D2) for Al, 2 sample type (#2,3) for Mg – no lace-like structure is required). To do for MISIS: provide required samples.
- Q10 (SK): Does the problem with inhibitor leaching take place, when PEO just immersed in electrolyte ?
- A10 (CB): Yes. Can be solved via polymer application on top as well. To do for HZG: provide information about respective polymer.
- Q11: To do for AC: list of chelating agents required for HZG. ASAP.

14h50 Theme : “Mechanism of LDH growth on surface of active metals” - Unplanned presentations of Dr. Maria Serdechnova.

15h10 Theme : “Administrative aspects of ACTICOAT projects” - Administrative presentation: Dr. Maria Serdechnova

To do:
1. Provide all requested information for the ACTICOAT webpage (all partners)
2. Send a template of the deliverable to all partners (MS)
3. Sent materials: initial Mg and Al alloys to TU (CB)
4. Sent materials: welded Mg and Al to TU + PEO treated (CB)
5. Next meeting: 04.02.2019, Moscow
