Pilot Project

The pilot project seeks to develop a holistic approach for the design of functional biopolymers that includes:

  • developing refineries using microorganisms from the Colombian biodiversity for the bioconversion of second generation biomass (non-edible biomass, and plastic waste) into biomolecules (polymers, enzymes) for recycling and degradation of plastics;
  • the incorporation of green chemistry, circular economy, and sustainability-by-design principles in the development of these biopolymers; and
  • to incorporate accountable methodologies to determine a prediction and reduce the impact of polymers through their life cycle.

This integrated approach brings together researchers from two different continents aside from requiring a broad range of expertise, from molecular biology all through polymer science and bioinformatics.
