Project
Phase 1
So far, natural hazards and their possible changes as a result of climate change have mostly been considered individually and in independent studies. However, such hazards can also occur simultaneously or in quick succession and in this way have particularly serious impacts on society, especially through cascading effects.
During the first project phase together with stakeholders from relevant fields of action, we worked from 2020-2023 on identifying and modeling such compound events, uncovering possible impact chains, and disclosing adaptation capacities. Together, we developed a blueprint for a targeted climate information system in the form of a climate adaptation academy, which is necessary for the implementation of an integrative climate adaptation concept in the coastal region to be able to deal with future challenges.
Phase 2
The project entered its 2nd phase in March 2024. In addition to continuing research aligned with stakeholder needs, the aim is to transdisciplinary develop and implement a coastal climate information platform and a digital web tool for adaptation as part of the blueprint developed in the first phase of the project. A further aim is to develop and provide concepts to disseminate decision-relevant and action-motivating knowledge to society via multipliers.
The project WAKOS - Water on the East Frisian Coasts is funded by the BMBF in the framework programme ‘Research for Sustainable Development (FONA)’ within the funding measure RegIKlim (Regional Information on Climate Action) as one of four projects in four different model regions.
